It's saying a lot that ultimately the best part of Super 8 is the kid's film at the end. This candy coated blockbuster's charm comes from the sense that back in the day, when Lionel Ritchie was still ruling a relevant Billboard chart, children were sweet, unaffected and just had more fun. They didn't need post-modern dialogue, social networking references, and spectacular special effects to have a good time. Ultimately, it's an indictment of our lack of imagination, and the second half of the film is only proof of that. Thanks goodness those kids are damn good actors.
