Have you ever heard of Jason Rohrer? What an interesting freelance developer... As his second latest indie game (after Passage), Sleep is Death is the kind of game you can play ages before the industry catch up with a gameplay that crazy.
First I've been playing Sleep is Death as you would with any other point and click game: trying open lockers, boxes and chests, click items again and again (and again). Beyond these aged game mecanics Sleep is Death is a very deep turn-based game, let me introduce to the uprising of cooperative gameplay.
In a nutshell, the game allows you 30 seconds in each screen to make a move before being transmitted back to your friend. Simply put : last game I got to zap and eat an ape with a long strawberry laser rifle or being rape by this vampiric crack addict monkey (ok my friends are a bit' insane but creatives). You can either point an arrow at an object and indicate what you'd like to do with it, in my case zap the monkey with my awesome pink rifle. Your friend in front of you will be the storytelling host. He has only that same 30 seconds to either custom or create a new scene. This time I got stuck in an other dimension because the ape was in fact the architect of time. At that point our story was over due to the unfortunate hunger death of my character.
That being said you are going to ask me: but how Rohrer's game is different from a low tech pen-and-paper Dungeons and Dragons session on acid?
First the computer screens that separates players and gives the experience a taste of strong believability. Second, time constraint, you won't be able to plan ahead your adventures. The game is about being quick and in this perspective Sleep is Death is really close to an art performance. On the top of these exiting features at the end of each game, you're left with a flip book containing your story you can use in you future second adventures with you friends. Creative games are the future, if you enjoyed Minecraft for building stuffs, add Sleep if Death to your epic wishlist as soon as you can!
