Storm Thorgerson

Ummagumma (1969)

Sortie : 25 octobre 1969 (France). Rock, Experimental, Psychedelic Rock

Album de Pink Floyd

Pinkerton a mis 4/10.

Annotation :

"This was the second design for Pink Floyd after A Saucerful of Secrets. It was an attempt to represent the many different layers in their music. No ephemeral pop band this, therefore no trivia, instead wheels within wheels, layers beneath layers, tunes replete with meaning and all this, for heaven's sake, in the same music."

Atom Heart Mother (1970)

Sortie : 10 octobre 1970 (France). Prog Rock, Psychedelic Rock

Album de Pink Floyd

Pinkerton a mis 9/10.

Annotation :

"I wanted to design a non-cover, something that was not like other covers - something that one would simply not expect. Not shocking, not mind altering, just unexpected. The cow was, in fact, more eye-catching than I had ever dared imagine; it was so different because it was so normal: so ordinary. It stood out a mile. The cow was your regular cow, your standard cow, what every cow should look like. To Pink Floyd, the cow seemed suitably resonant, but unrelated and certainly open to different interpretations. For them, Atom Heart Mother was the big breakthrough in the UK despite the fact that the record company hated the cover. Still, nobody know the nature of the link between sales and design, if one exists at all..."

Album de Trees

Pinkerton a mis 6/10.

Annotation :

"A little girl, a Victorian dress, a public park in Hampstead, a simple glass of water, a quick sweep of her arm, a black and white photo and coloured and the result - a little magic, in my so very humble opinion."

The Dark Side of the Moon (1973)

Sortie : 24 mars 1973 (France). Art Rock, Prog Rock

Album de Pink Floyd

Pinkerton a mis 6/10.

Annotation :

"The idea itself was cunningly cobbled from a standard physics textbook, which illustrated light passing through a prism. Of significance was the simple, elegant layout against black - standard textbook illustrations did not do this. Also important to the art direction, was the fortuitous decision to listen to Rick Wright (Pink Floyd’s keyboard player), who suggested we do something clean, elegant and graphic, not photographic - not a figurative picture. And then to connect this idea to their live show, which was famous for its lighting, and subsequently to connect this to ambition and madness, themes Roger was exploring in the lyrics... The refracting glass prism referred to Floyd light shows - consummate use of light in the concert setting. Its outline is triangular and triangles are symbols of ambition, and are redolent of pyramids, both cosmic and mad in equal measure, all these ideas touching on themes in the lyrics. The joining of the spectrum extending round the back cover and across the gatefold inside was seamless like the segueing tracks on the album, whilst the opening heartbeat was represented by a repeating blip in one of the colours..."

Houses of the Holy (1973)

Sortie : 28 mars 1973 (France). Hard Rock

Album de Led Zeppelin

Pinkerton a mis 8/10.

Annotation :

"Kids from the future were imagined to coalesce spiritually in mass mutation and leave the Earth as a tower of flaming energy. Yup, that should be big enough for Zeppelin. Our variant was to have blonde and blue-eyed kids (Midwich Cuckoos) clambering across the rocks in some magical location, Giant’s Causeway, climbing towards a fiery dawn."

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974)

Sortie : 18 novembre 1974 (France). Prog Rock

Album de Genesis

Pinkerton a mis 8/10.

Annotation :

"We conceived of a story board or comic strip, but made of photographs.....A major part of this involved the character stepping outside the comic strip and taking a detached view, looking back at this life, a step considered necessary in the process of self-realisation. Thus the main character is seen literally stepping out of the picture, leaving a man-shaped white hole in his wake."

Wish You Were Here (1975)

Sortie : 12 septembre 1975. Prog Rock, Rock

Album de Pink Floyd

Pinkerton a mis 9/10.

Annotation :

"The theme of absence, all images relate to absence, an empty or absent gesture. The handshake from the burning man is as empty or absent a gesture as you can get. The man is really on fire. He wore an asbestos suit under the cloth suit, which extends over the head, where a wig was attached. The first attempts at setting him alight were in the wrong wind direction. The flames were blown back and ignited his mustache for an instant. A close shave, one might say.”

Presence
6.9

Presence (1976)

Sortie : 31 mars 1976 (France). Hard Rock

Album de Led Zeppelin

Pinkerton a mis 6/10.

Annotation :

"Led Zeppelin! Christ, what was bigger than Led Zeppelin? The most powerful and notorious band in the galaxy. Musically, personally, managerially and mythically. So how the hell do you approach design for such a colossus? Well, firstly, with great trepidation, and then secondly with courtesy and diplomacy, deference at all times, and then with a strong desire to please and not upset nor disappoint. We needed something so powerful, so huge that it made you weak just to think of it. And what did we come up with... a little bitty black object sitting on an ordinary table surrounded by a rather ordinary family. An ordinary family? What's the power in that? But no ordinary setting this, and certainly no ordinary object. Perhaps it was a cosmic battery, or a spiritual relic or alien artifact, exposure to which seemed essential - it filled your life, it sustained you, it bathed you in mysterious emanations. It was vital for growing infants, for education, useful to science and financial institutions, handy for both leisure and sport, indispensable even to romance. It was central to everyday existence - utilitarian, religious and addictive. So powerful that back in those days everyone had one, so powerful that nowadays one didn't need one any longer, so pervasive that the memory alone would suffice, so powerful that it didn't actually need to be there, no depth cues nor shadows cast by the object, more a hole than a thing, an absence rather than a presence. So powerful that the mere suggestion was enough, like a secretly whispered word, like a radical idea or a desert wind, substantial but not needing substance, just like the band, their music and their reputation. Much to our surprise, and I think to their credit, they embraced it wholeheartedly, entitling the album after the image. I hope they love it still, as much as I do."

Annotation :

"Here is a design taken unequivocally from the title. I don't think I heard the music, I'm sorry to confess, but the title was so evocative and promising that it wasn't necessary."
