Cheers est un petit bar à Boston, MA. Comme le propriétaire Sam Malone s'ouvre, un couple entre dans le bar. Le Professeur Sumner Sloane et sa fiancée Diane Chambers doivent aller à la Barbade pour se marier, mais l'ex-femme de Sumner a toujours l'alliance. Sumner demande à Sam de surveiller Diane pour lui, tandis qu'il va la chercher. Sam essaye de bavarder avec Diane mais elle n'est pas intéressée.
