The Silmarillion

Résumé : The tales of 'The Silmarillion' were the underlying inspiration and source of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writings; he worked on the book throughout his life, but never brought it to a final form. Long preceding in its origins 'The Lord of the Rings', it is the story of the First Age of Tolkien's world, the ancient drama to which characters in 'The Lord of the Rings' look back, and in which some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part. The title "Silmarillion" is shortened from "Quenta Silmarillion", 'The History of the Silmarils', the three great jewels created by Fëanor, most gifted of the Elves, in which he imprisoned the light of the Two Trees that illumined Valinor, the land of the gods. When Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, destroyed the Trees, that light lived on only in the Silmarils; and Morgoth seized them and set them in his crown, guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle Earth. The Silmarillion is the history of the rebellion of Fëanor and his people against the gods, their exile in Middle Earth, and their war, hopeless despite all the heroism of Elves and Men, against the great Enemy. _____ Les contes du Silmarillion furent l'inspiration sous-jacente et la source de l'imaginaire littéraire de J.R.R. Précédant de beaucoup Le Seigneur des Anneaux, c'est l'histoire du Premier Age du monde de Tolkien, le drame antique qu'évoquent les personnages du Seigneur des Anneaux et auquel certains d'entre eux prennent part. Le titre, Silmarillion, dérive de Quenta Silmarillion, " L'Histoire des Silmarils ", les trois grands joyaux créés par Fëanor, qui doit aux Elfes la plupart de ses dons, où il emprisonna la lumière des Deux Arbres qui éclairaient Valinor, la terre des Dieux. Quand Morgoth, le premier Seigneur Noir, détruisit les Arbres, cette lumière ne survécut que chez les Silmarils : et Morgoth s'en empara et les plaça sur sa couronne, conservée, dans sa forteresse impénétrable d'Angband, au nord du Milieu-de-la-Terre. Le Silmarillion est l'histoire de la rébellion de Feanor et de son peuple contre les Dieux, leur exil dans la Terre-du-Milieu et leur guerre sans espoir contre le grand Ennemi, en dépit de l'héroïsme des Elfes et des Hommes.
