Michael Nyman : la passion de la répétition
Michael Laurence Nyman nait le 23 mars 1944 à Stratford, Londres, dans une famille de Polonais juifs immigrés. Il étudie au "King's College London" avant d'être accepté à la "Royal Academy of Music" en 1961. Il y étudie avec Alan Bush et Thurston Dart, se focalisant sur le piano et la musique baroque du XVIIe siècle. En 1964, il remporte le Howard Carr Memorial Prize de composition.
Il découvre son style en jouant l'aria "Madamina, il catalogo è questo" du Don Giovanni de Mozart au piano. Cette aria sera l'aspiration pour la pièce "In Re Don Giovanni". En 1969, il écrit le libretto de l'opéra Down by the Greenwood Side" et réalise le court-métrage "Love Love Love" avant de s'engager dans la critique de musique où il est reconnu pour avoir été le premier à utiliser le terme "minimalisme" dans un article de 1968.
Il débute sa carrière de compositeur au cinéma pour la comédie "Keep It Up Downstairs" (1976). Sa collaboration la plus fructueuse sera avec le réalisateur britannique Peter Greenaway pour qui il composera 7 partitions. Pour ces partitions, il s'inspire des travaux de Henry Pucell notamment pour le morceau Memorial du film "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & her Lover" (1989) ou encore Mozart.
La notoriété publique interviendra avec le score du "Piano" (1993) de Jane Campion. Cela lui ouvre les portes d'Hollywood où il travaillera pour "Gattaca" (1997), "Ravenous" (1999) et "The End of the Affair" (1999).
Parmi ses autres travaux, on compte de nombreux opéras, des pièces vocales et de la musique de chambre.

Seven pieces from La Traversée de Paris were repurposed or revised by Nyman to form the bulk of his score for Peter Greenaway's film Prospero's Books.
Four of these pieces did not undergo any changes, and were simply retitled for their use in the film and for the score's album release:
Débarcadère (retitled "Reconciliation").
Du faubourg à l'Assemblée (retitled "Prospero's Curse").
Passage de l'Égalité (retitled "Cornfield").
Cinéma d'actualités (retitled "History of Sycorax").
The other three pieces were revised to varying degrees:
L'entrée, in an extended form, became "Prospero's Magic".
Le Labyrinthe, with the addition of a vocal line, became "Come Unto These Yellow Sands".
Le théâtre d'ombres chinoises, in a much shorter form, became "Miranda".
Two other pieces were used in the film but were not included on the soundtrack CD:
De L'Hôtel de Ville à la Concorde, used at a low level under the scene in which Prospero summons the harpies.
Les Murs des Fédérés, with the Rimbaud text removed but Sarah Leonard's higher register melody intact for the scene in which Prospero 'drowns' his books.

Michael nyman full album Carrington was composed for the 1995 British biographical film written and directed by Christopher Hampton about the life of the English painter Dora Carrington (1893–1932), who was known simply as "Carrington". The screenplay is based on Lytton Strachey: A Critical Biography, the 1967-68 two-volume biography of writer and critic Lytton Strachey (1880–1932) by Michael Holroyd.
Part of his very best, Carrington by Michael Nyman was primarily based upon his String Quartet No.3, with which Hampton created a temp track, and wanted as a leitmotif for Lytton Strachey. The score is also based on Schubert's String Quintet in C, D. 956, whose Adagio is played during a scene in the film. However, there is also newly composed material for the film, including "Virgin on the roof," which was incorporated into the String Quartet No. 4, and the theme for Mark Gertler, which is derived from 3 Quartets, which was composed at roughly the same time.
