Angelina Jolie as a director is, to me, a personality to watch.
Sure, there are still some missteps in this film, but she’s only directed three movies so far — and honestly, she handles this one with honor.
Unbroken, or the incredible fate of Louis Zamperini, a modest Italian immigrant who became an Olympic champion and a World War II survivor, thanks to his inner strength, courage, and hope.
The film may be a bit reserved; it feels more like a character biography than a broader war narrative. It’s clear that Angelina Jolie was deeply moved by her meeting with the real Louis Zamperini — her tribute is heartfelt and touching.
Jack O’Connell carries the film masterfully, showing that he’s grown in maturity and is ready to take on more tragic roles. Gone are the days of Cook from Skins!
The supporting cast, especially Finn Wittrock and Domhnall Gleeson, are equally solid in their performances.
And finally, the revelation of the film for me is Miyavi. I had my doubts at first — I wasn’t even sure I recognized him. A flamboyant, makeup-wearing singer with long hair, who had only acted in a not-so-great film before, showing up in a major American movie? No way… and yet, here he is!
Miyavi has grown immensely. This huge Japanese personality has clearly decided to pursue cinema and take on the world — and good for him!
He captured the ambiguous and toxic dynamic between his character and the protagonist with nuance. He managed to bring Mutsuhiro Watanabe, “The Bird,” to life with depth and subtlety — no overacting, quite impressive on his part.
Unbroken is a beautiful film. It shows that with courage and hope, people are capable of enduring the worst tragedies.
