Canterbury
L'Ecole, ou la scène de Canterbury, est un sous-genre du rock progressif ayant émergé assez précocement à la fin des années 1960. Son nom vient de son berceau, une ville du sud-est de l'Angleterre où siège l'Université du Kent, même si par la suite, Londres devint sa terre d'accueil.
De fait, il s'agit en grande partie d'une aventure humaine vécue par des musiciens qui circulent entre différentes formations, depuis le noyau des Wilde Flowers auquel ont participé Robert Wyatt, Hugh Hopper, Kevin Ayers, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings, Richard Coughlan et David Sinclair. Il en découle deux groupes majeurs, Soft Machine et Caravan - le premier est plus expérimental au point de s'aventurer vers le jazz moderne mais académique, le second est plus proche du rock progressif. D'autres formations et artistes se distinguent au sein de cette scène foisonnante (au moins qualitativement parlant), en particulier Daevid Allen et Gong, puis les tardifs Hatfield and the North et National Health, sans oublier Steve Hillage avec ou sans Khan.
