Il est surtout connu pour être le papa de la série Rayman (1995 ~).
Anecdotes :
- Son tout premier projet était un shoot'em up nommé Mechanic Warriors, un jeu développé indépendamment mais refusé par Lankhor. Il se fera ensuite remarquer par Ubisoft lors d'un concours.
- Il a reçu l'insigne de Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres en 2006, en même temps que Shigeru Miyamoto et Frédérick Raynal.
- Il a eu l'idée de Rayman en regardant un vieux dessin qu'il avait fait au lycée d'un héros sans bras ni jambe.
- Peter Jackson avait demandé exprès à Michel Ancel de collaborer pour l'adaptation vidéo-ludique de son film King Kong, après avoir joué à Beyond Good & Evil.
