"J'ai terminé 'Les Hauts de Hurlevent', ce livre extraordinaire : c'est de tous les romans que j'ai lu celui dont j'aimerais le moins être un des personnages. Tous les « acteurs » de ce drame sont tellement anormaux et déplaisants. La seule faute du livre est qu'il soit censé être écrit par un homme de bonne compagnie. Heathcliff et Catherine sont d'originales créations de l'esprit, dessinées d'un trait extrêmement puissant ; il est impossible de croire à l'existence de tels êtres humains : ils ressemblent davantage à des démons. La vision du début est à mon avis le plus beau morceau du livre."
