Poetry and Jazz in Concert (2006)

Sortie : 2006 (France).

Compilation de Michael, Quintet Garrick

Annotation :

Michael Garrick (1933-2011)

« Shake had first got to know Michael Garrick while they were students at London University. The link was solidified at the Marquee where Garrick also played and Shake would appear as a guest star with Garrick's Quartet. In appearance, Garrick - a short, white, slightly built Englishman with a neat goatee beard - was the opposite of Shake, but they had a mutual interest in philosophy and religion. In his autobiography, 'Dusk Fire: Jazz in English Hands', Garrick explains how religious and mystical interests developed - in particular the effect of attending a Theosophical Society retreat in 1962. Shake had a background in Methodism and had published two essays exploring the spiritual element in contemporary Caribbean poetry in 'Bim'.
As jazz musicians, Garrick and Shake also shared interest in innovation, in their case linking jazz to poetry, and developing a jazz format for sacred music. » (Page 53)
