La série a été mise à l'arrêt début 2021. Le personnage est récupéré depuis des années par l'extrême-droite américaine et des groupuscules comme QAnon, et l'image de personnes portant le crâne du Punisher sur leurs vêtements parmi les envahisseurs du Capitole en janvier 2021 a été la goutte d'eau pour Marvel qui a mis le Punisher sous le tapis jusqu'à nouvel ordre.
Mars 2022. Une nouvelle série signée Jason Aaron est lancée. La note d'intention : "se débarrasser du logo floqué sur le plastron du personnage, et lui apposer un rôle de vilain plus marqué, moins ambigu" et promet "le chapitre final du Punisher". (source : Comicsblog)

En parallèle sortent des one-shots Punisher War Journal et Garth Ennis a confirmé que sa nouvelle mini-série ne devrait pas tarder.
