Tenté à la télé plusieurs fois sur une dizaine d'années, terminé sur sur OK.
A parodic take on an already adapted long series of mediocre spy action novels, readjusted to his comedian star.
Much of the humour is made out of the french secret agent's chauvinism and obliviousness to foreign cultures, racism and sexism (plus implied homosexuality) as well as from parodying obvious James Bond antics and will mainly work because people love to look down on their forebearers and their outmoded views. It is first smile-inducing until you realize that those elements are running jokes that make the whole film with sexual innuendo.
There's kiddy love for old cinema shown for example with amusing uses of "old style" music tracks and sound cues (and even Pink Panther-like ones) that rapidly turn to exhausting over-exploitation, like every other joke in the movie, some of wich even straining themselves thanks to stretching or useless explanations.
All of this contributes to make the rare bursts of absurd humour refreshing.
Dujardin fits physically that kind of hero, a perfect cross between classy and dumb-looking. And he's used to play the empty head as straight as he is asked to do here. (Too bad I only feel the desire to beat him when I see his dumb face and half-wit characters.)
As for Atika and Bejo, it's a good thing they don't have more screen time.
Best scene: the chicken fight.
Score: 4,5/10 (+1,5)
Enjoyment: 1~2/5
Well made movie with fast paced but globally unfunny humour.
Better watch ARTE's Au service de la France, that tries to mix humour and seriousness, thus providing a bit more, and succeeds. (The show also offers itself the luxury of actual characters.)
