A "love letter" to the old Hollywood set during the transition between silent and sound eras, initially reflecting the exuberance of it and later transitioning into drama and even tragedy (just like any raise and fall story) by way of comedy.
It is both nostalgic and eager to cross many bullet points against the industry of that time, supported for most of its excessive (yet too short of a) runtime by Robbie's energy and Brad Pitt (despite none of them being the focused character*). Several scenes in that 3 hours slog taste like forgotten fat, especially when they're not around. The film ultimately shots itself in the head along Pitt's character, since he was the only thing close to a character Babylon offers.
All those badly mixed storylines calling various genres and mixed signals are kept in a rather well made package, the only thing coherent through the whole film.
(*Weird that I'd never seen that bland pretty face main actor before. He would do well on TV.)
Score: 6/10
Enjoyment: 3->2/5
Chazelle is in dire need of limitations.
