Synopsis · This was not filmed in 1901. Burlingham wasn't filming as early as that. A copy may well have been left with the photographer in Zermatt in 1913 but it cannot have been the only copy and the film couldn't have been lost in a shipwreck because we know it was released. It was moreover not remotely the first film of an ascent of an alpine peak. The first known is by Ormiston-Smith in 1903 who also made a film of an ascent of the Matterhorn but Léon Gaumont was in person supervising filming in the Alps in 1904. Félix Mesguich claims to have made a film in the Alps in 1905. The Pathé film of the Ascent of Mont Blanc was made in 1907 (Baby-Pathé on YouTube). Maria Piacenza made his Ascent of the Matterhorn in 1911 (also on YouTube).
