A Coming of Age Story
Didi is a beautiful coming of age story about a teenager in Southern California in a Taiwanese immigrant family. It was done really well, and if you're like me and grew up in the 2000s, it captured that Internet-birth era perfectly. An era where teenagers were running around outside half of the time, and online for the other half. It took me back to the days of going on AOL Instant Messenger and talking to your crush.
What I didn't like about the film is that while I felt like Didi had full character growth by the end of the film, you don't see that growth until the very end. With coming of age films like Mid-90s or Mignonnes you'll have a main character who is a little shit, but has these qualities that trigger your empathy because you remember what it was like to be that age. Didi was just kind of a little shit for 98% of this movie.
