Résumé : The Short Story's Mutations confirmed and established Frances Newman's reputation. It was an astounding idea to give the evolutionary history of the Short Story through an anthology (chosen with a view to indicate evolutionary growth) of the masterpieces of the great periods, and to make them chapters of a book by brilliant intervening criticism. Still more astounding was the fact that although two of the versions were made from literal translations all the other translations were her own, both from classical an modern language, giving still another indication of her amazing erudition. And so good are these translations that for discriminating readers, they are displating the existing "standard" versions.
