Critique :

'' In The Closet'' est une chanson d'amour extraite du huitième album solo de Michael, Dangerous. Elle parle d'une femme que Michael aime, mais, en raison des problèmes qu'il rencontre, il ne peut pas afficher publiquement ses sentiments. Il garde donc leur relation secrète.

Le magazine Rolling Stone a qualifié le morceau de ''chanson la plus sensuelle et la plus ouvertement sexuelle que [Jackson] ait jamais interprétée''.

Jackson avait initialement prévu de faire collaborer Madonna sur le titre et l'a invitée à dîner à trois reprises début 1991. Concernant cette collaboration avortée, Madonna a déclaré :

Je pense qu'il voulait simplement un titre provocateur et qu'au final, il ne souhaitait pas que le contenu de la chanson soit à la hauteur de ce titre.

L'ingénieur Rob Disner se souvient avoir abordé Michael après les réunions :

Quand j'ai interrogé Michael plus tard sur sa visite, il m'a dit qu'elle lui avait fait peur.

Le journaliste Jeff Weiss affirme que ''l’union créative a très probablement échoué en raison de divergences stylistiques majeures''.

Elle a été remplacée par la princesse Stéphanie de Monaco, qui a utilisé sa voix parlée envoûtante plutôt que des vocalises à la Madonna.
