''Off The Wall'', titre phare de l'album solo qui a révélé Michael Jackson au grand public, est sorti en single en 1980, avec un tempo entraînant et fluide.

La chanson évoque l'insouciance et la vie à cent à l'heure, une philosophie qui reflétait parfaitement l'état d'esprit de Jackson dans sa jeunesse, avant que des démêlés judiciaires et des problèmes personnels ne le freinent. Ce titre s'est classé dans le top 10 aux États-Unis et a permis à Jackson de devenir le premier artiste à placer quatre singles du même album dans le top 10. La chanson a été écrite par Rod Temperton, également auteur de ''Thriller''.
