Mariah Carey a évoqué son expérience d'écriture de chansons lors d'une interview avec Chris Nickson, auteur du livre "Mariah Carey Revisited: Her Story" en 1998. :

J'ai écrit l'idée de départ de "One Sweet Day" avec Walter (Afanasieff), et j'avais le refrain… puis je me suis arrêté et j'ai dit : "J'aimerais vraiment faire ça avec Boyz II Men", parce que… évidemment, je suis un grand fan et je trouvais que le morceau était fait pour eux, leurs voix étaient exceptionnelles. Alors je l'ai mis de côté et je me suis dit : "Qui sait si ça se fera un jour ? Mais je ne veux pas terminer cette chanson parce que je veux que ce soit notre chanson si jamais on la fait ensemble."L'idée, c'est que quand on perd des êtres chers, ça change la vie et notre vision des choses. Quand ils sont arrivés au studio, je leur ai fait écouter l'idée de la chanson et quand elle a été terminée, ils se sont regardés, un peu abasourdis, et m'ont dit que Nat (Nathan Morris) avait écrit une chanson pour son road manager décédé. Les paroles étaient quasiment les mêmes et les accords étaient les mêmes. C'était vraiment bizarre, on a fini la chanson sur le champ. Nous étions tous un peu déstabilisés. Le destin y était pour beaucoup. Je sais que certains ne me croiront pas, mais nous n'aurions jamais inventé une histoire pareille.
