Lana a déclaré avoir écrit cette chanson parce qu'elle est ''encore parfois triste'', car elle essaie de lutter contre des choses qui échappent à son contrôle. ''Sad Girl'' parle avant tout de sa préférence pour ce qu'elle veut plutôt que pour ce qu'elle devrait.
