Critique :

"We Belong Together" est le deuxième single extrait de l'album du grand retour de Mariah Carey, sorti en 2005 et intitulé "The Emancipation of Mimi".

Après une période sans succès au sommet des charts pop au début des années 2000, "We Belong Together" a connu un succès retentissant. Le titre est resté numéro un du Billboard Hot 100 pendant 14 semaines, ce qui représente à l'époque le deuxième plus long règne de l'histoire des charts américains, derrière "One Sweet Day" de Mariah Carey et Boyz II Men (16 semaines). Le single a atteint la première place des charts et a été certifié multi-platine dans de nombreux pays, dont sept fois platine aux États-Unis.

"We Belong Together" a remporté deux Grammy Awards en 2006 : celui de la meilleure chanson R&B et celui de la meilleure performance vocale R&B féminine, après avoir été nominé dans huit catégories, dont celles d'enregistrement de l'année et de chanson de l'année. Le titre a également remporté un ASCAP Award pour la chanson de l'année et a été classé numéro un au Billboard par les BMI Awards. Billboard l'a inclus dans sa liste des 500 meilleures chansons pop et Rolling Stone l'a placé à la 5e place de sa liste des 100 plus grandes chansons R&B du XXIe siècle.

Le clip vidéo montre Mariah Carey se préparant à épouser un homme plus âgé (interprété par Eric Roberts) avant de s'enfuir avec un homme plus jeune (interprété par Wentworth Miller, star de la série Prison Break).

Dans une interview accordée au magazine People en 2018, Mariah a déclaré à propos de "We Belong Together" :

Je l'adore toujours. C'est l'une de mes chansons préférées à interpréter. Pour certaines chansons, je suis seule à écrire les paroles, et parfois, collaborer avec d'autres permet de faire un brainstorming et de vraiment travailler ensemble pour un résultat final parfait. C'était le cas de celle-ci. C'était vraiment un projet fait avec passion.
