Critique :

"Y.M.C.A.", premier titre et premier single de l'album « Cruisin' » des Village People (1978), semble à première vue vanter les mérites de la Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), une organisation internationale qui promeut les valeurs chrétiennes par le biais du développement de la santé physique. Cependant, la chanson a aussi été interprétée comme un hymne gay, en raison de la réputation de l'association comme lieu de rencontre et de drague pour les jeunes hommes. Victor Willis, co-auteur et chanteur principal, a déclaré par l'intermédiaire de son attaché de presse que l'intention n'était pas de l'interpréter ainsi, mais plutôt comme un hymne aux sorties entre amis hétéros dans ce lieu.

Quelles que soient ses origines, "Y.M.C.A." Elle est néanmoins devenue l'un des plus grands succès du groupe, se classant en tête de nombreux palmarès dans le monde entier (mais pas aux États-Unis, où elle a été devancée de justesse par "Do Ya' Think I'm Sexy" de Rod Stewart), étant l'un des rares singles à s'être vendu à plus de 10 millions d'exemplaires dans le monde, et devenant l'une de leurs chansons emblématiques encore jouée dans les boîtes de nuit du monde entier.

L'auteur-compositeur-interprète Victor Willis a déclaré à Billboard :

J'ai expliqué [au producteur français Jacques Morali] que l'acronyme signifiait Young Men’s Christian Association (Association chrétienne de jeunes gens) et je lui ai raconté comment, enfant, à San Francisco, je fréquentais assidûment le YMCA pour jouer au basket avec mes amis et courir sur la piste d'athlétisme. Je trouvais important d'exprimer ma gratitude envers ce lieu où j'ai passé mon enfance, qui m'a tenu éloigné de la rue et qui a contribué à faire de moi ce que je suis aujourd'hui.
