Critique :

''You Are Not Alone'' fut la première chanson de l'histoire du Billboard Hot 100 à entrer directement en tête des charts, et la dernière de Michael Jackson à atteindre la première place aux États-Unis. Le titre se classa également numéro un en Espagne, en France, en Suisse, en Nouvelle-Zélande et au Royaume-Uni.

Il s'agissait du 13e numéro un de Michael Jackson aux États-Unis, lui permettant de dépasser les Supremes et de se hisser à la troisième place du classement des chansons ayant le plus de titres numéro un aux États-Unis – un titre qu'il conserva jusqu'en 2013, année où Rihanna l'égala avec sa participation au titre ''The Monster'' d'Eminem, décrochant ainsi son 13e numéro un. En 2016, Rihanna dépassa Jackson avec son titre « Work », qui devint son 14e numéro un.

L'idée de cette chanson est née d'un appel téléphonique au manager de R. Kelly, lui demandant d'écrire une chanson pour Jackson. Au début, Kelly crut à une plaisanterie, mais lorsqu'il comprit que la demande de Jackson était sérieuse, il se rendit aussitôt en studio et composa ''You Are Not Alone''. Après avoir fait écouter le morceau à Jackson au téléphone, ce dernier l'approuva sans modification et s'envola pour Chicago afin d'enregistrer sa voix par-dessus celle de Kelly.

Kelly a ensuite inclus sa propre version de ''You Are Not Alone'' en tant que titre caché sur son album Love Letter. Même Diana Ross des Supremes, qui avait glissé à la quatrième place (du classement des titres ayant atteint la première place aux États-Unis) à cause de ce morceau, a enregistré ''You Are Not Alone'' l'année suivante.

Plus tard, il a été révélé que Kelly avait plagié deux frères auteurs-compositeurs belges. Le tribunal de première instance a rejeté leur plainte, mais l'appel a finalement abouti à une condamnation pour plagiat.

Dans le documentaire Surviving R. Kelly de 2020, une jeune fille a affirmé que Kelly avait écrit la chanson à propos de la fausse couche qu'elle avait subie alors qu'elle n'avait que 17 ans.
