On s'accorde à dire que la septième génération de consoles commença le 21 novembre 2004 avec la sortie japonaise de la Nintendo DS, suivie de la PlayStation Portable (PSP) le 12 décembre 2004.
Pour les consoles de salon, c'est la Xbox 360 de Microsoft qui a ouvert le bal le 22 novembre 2005 en Amérique du Nord (2 décembre en Europe), suivie un an plus tard de la PlayStation 3 le 11 novembre 2006 (23 mars 2007 en Europe) et la Wii dans la foulée (19 novembre 2006 aux USA, 8 décembre en Europe).
La 7e génération de consoles a apporté les manettes sans fils, la haute définition sur PS3 et Xbox 360 et l'intégration de manettes à reconnaissance de mouvements (Wii) ou de périphériques de contrôle corporels (extensions sur PS3 et Xbox 360).
