Une liste faite il y a quelques mois, pour un groupe d'amis anglo. J'y trouve encore une certaine valeur, donc là-voici accompagnée de mes deux sous.

Mon oncle
7.6

Mon oncle (1958)

1 h 57 min. Sortie : 10 mai 1958. Comédie

Film de Jacques Tati

Annotation :

Poetic perspective on the changes cities faced in France (and all of Europe tbh) during the shift from old world (local, loud, messy) to the new world (global, uniform, sleek).

This movie is light and beautiful. Jacques Tati is the original Wes Anderson, mesmerizing everyone with his unique camera.

Best enjoyed: When you need to take a break from your overwhelming life.

Le Mépris
6.8

Le Mépris (1963)

1 h 43 min. Sortie : 20 décembre 1963 (France). Drame, Romance

Film de Jean-Luc Godard

Annotation :

Story of a film maker, this movie is a reflection on the state of cinema, as well as marriage, as well as how goddam beautiful Brigitte Bardot is.
Honestly, just the fact that:
1- Godard is the director (kind of the french movie king if you didn't know yet)
2- BB plays in it (kind of the french movie queen if you didn't know yet)
3- It is set in Italy (kind of the world's paradise if you didn't know yet)
should be enough for you to be like: I'll watch it right now!

Best enjoyed: When you are ready to dive into the deep.

Peau d'âne
6.8

Peau d'âne (1970)

1 h 25 min. Sortie : 20 décembre 1970 (France). Drame, Fantastique, Comédie musicale

Film de Jacques Demy

Noémie Bourbonnais a mis 10/10.

Annotation :

Tale of a princess who flees her kingdom to avoid the forced wedding her dad wants to have with her (GoT much?).

This movie is so. freaking. beautiful. You don't even need to be in a Fairy Tale mood. Jacques Demy is a master of the camera and story telling, mixing styles, times and rules. With an outdated story, he makes a one of a weird kind movie!

Best enjoyed: With your boo at home, with your little sister, or with your bros after a hit from the little MJ.

Le Roi et l'Oiseau
7.8

Le Roi et l'Oiseau (1980)

1 h 23 min. Sortie : 19 mars 1980. Fantastique, Animation, Romance

Long-métrage d'animation de Paul Grimault

Noémie Bourbonnais a mis 10/10.

Annotation :

This story is an adventure involving a crazy mean king, a dope ass bird, two lovers and other stuff.

First screened in 1953, this is a movie that greatly inspired the studio Ghibli. This take on the classical story of Andersen The Shepherdess and the Chimneysweep is poetic, captivating and very modern for its time. Also, the music is divine.

Best enjoyed: Idk i love it any time! Maybe when you were supposed to go out in town but everyone bailed on you so your stuck home and don't really want to watch 4 hours of a stupid netflix show but HEY you remember this note and be like "You know what? I want to watch a french feel-good movie".

La vie est un long fleuve tranquille
6.7

La vie est un long fleuve tranquille (1988)

1 h 30 min. Sortie : 3 février 1988. Comédie

Film de Étienne Chatiliez

Annotation :

A comedy about two kids from two families (at opposite ends of the social ladders) who get exchange at their birth. The story starts 12 years later, when the mistake is discovered.

Kinda different from the other pick, this movie is a very dark and delicious comedy, like us french know how to do so well. The way it shows the very christian french people vs trashy redneck is just succulent.

Best enjoyed: If you want a comedy, and feel cheeky enough to dare some oldish french movie (you WILL be rewarded for daring, I promise!)
