It’s so pure, yet so mystical, there’s so many jarring images, and horrifying scenes, a lot of nightmare fuel.
Godard confronts us, criticizes our ignorance, venality, and our vulgarity. And he does it in the most extreme way, going against the popular norms of narrative cinema.
It’s excruciating but also fascinating. Witnessing old conventions literally burning from the ground, and the old world getting massacred, butchered and mocked.
And there’s this couple, for which we have no sympathy, going through their own wreck, heartless and full of hatred and anger. It’s impossible to care about them, but Godard glues your eyes to the screen, he wants you to despise them. He forces you to prey for the story to end.
Weekend is a radical film, and an impressive one. I am completely obsessed by it, I need to watch it again.
